Special Olympics Excitement Wraps-Up

Special Olympics Barbados wraps up a season of competition this week with junior track and field and cricket.  Monday gets off to a running start with the Special Olympics National Games Junior Track and Field Meet at the Carlton Grounds in Black Rock.  The youngest Special Olympics athletes, all under age 8, will put their talents on display.  For many of them, this will be their first opportunity to demonstrate to the sports community and larger society that intellectual challenges do not limit the spirit of an athlete. All of Barbados is invited to join in the competition and fun of Special Olympics junior track and field.  The event is free and open to the public.

And who doesn’t love cricket – especially when it is free?  Tuesday, the public is also invited to come out and show its affection for the sport and its support of some remarkable athletes at the Special Olympics National Games Cricket Tournament. Teams representing various special units across the island, as well as individual athletes, will go for the boundaries – and surpass them.  The venue for the Special Olympics National Games Cricket Tournament is the Police Sports Club in Weymouth.  Special Olympics Barbados cricketers have proven themselves in the past on the international field of competition. In 2007, as champions of cricket in the Caribbean, the Barbados Special Olympics team won the Silver Medal when the game was played as a demonstration sport at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China.

The Cricket Tournament will conclude several weeks of events that comprise the Special Olympics Annual National Games, held in conjunction with March: The Month of the Disabled. Competitions have been held in aquatics, bocce, football and, the senior track and field event, the Special Olympics National Games Track and Field Meet.
